Hernan Bas | Lehmann Maupin

We stopped by Lehmann Maupin’s new space in Hong Kong to check out their new exhibition of  paintings by Miami artist Hernan Bas.

For its first exhibition of Hernan Bas in Hong Kong, Lehmann Maupin presents Case Studies, a series of paintings depicting young androgynous males in the transitional period between youth and adulthood. The adolescent men portrayed in each picture, amidst dense, lush tropical landscapes conjure feelings of uneasiness, fear, awkwardness, and curiosity. The paintings themselves seem a mixture of emotions and references stemming from horror films, comics, television, art history, fairy tales and the occult. The “protagonists” of each painting seem to suggest a longing and thirst for knowledge through actions without the skill or understanding to perform them properly. The naivety of each character sparks feelings of sympathy and concern as they express a desire both for change and to preserve the present.
