Last weekend M+B Gallery in Beverly Hills opened its new exhibition of drawings by Aurel Schmidt alongside photomontages by Pierre Molinier. The juxtaposition of the media and subject matter draw eerily on the viewers compulsion to look for patterns, creating a peculiar and dark tension between the overtly sexual photomontages and the strangely seductive, expertly crafted drawings. The works are repulsive, peculiar, and enticing all at once, like a crash on the freeway they are at once indicative of violence and pure human curiosity. Each drawing is itself a montage of people. People existing both in the lives of the artist and the viewer. It is the familiarity of a finger, a lip or shadow that conjures a feeling of mysterious sensuality.
Aurel Schmidt and Pierre Molinier, is open through June 21st.
